2017 Business Citizen-of-the-Year, Steve Sears

Steve Sears, co-owner of Sam’s Anchor Café, is the Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Volunteer-Citizen-of-the-Year.

Steve is not only a prominent local businessman, but his volunteer activities are a model for others. He was president of our Chamber of Commerce three different times for a total of nine years; has been on the Tiburon Fire District Board for the past seven years;  is on “Destination Tiburon,” the town’s economic development committee; and has been a member of the Tiburon Peninsula Foundation for 17 years.

He coached a Pop Warner football team for two years and is active at Saint Hilary’s Church and School. He is one of the founders of both the Tiburon Wine Festival and the chamber’s annual Holiday Festival, and has been the unofficial chair of all the Friday Nights on Main Street since they began.

Steve grew up in San Louis Obispo and says, even as a kid, he wanted to be in the restaurant business. After earning his degree in economics at UC Santa Barbara, he started grad school but quit to become a full-time bartender. He soon moved up the ladder to be bar manager and then general manager for a variety of restaurants. In his quest to learn the business, he moved to Tucson, Portland, Maui and Sausalito before he and Brian Wilson bought Sam’s from Jim Bigalow.

Steve remembers the sorry state Sam’s was in at that point. He and Brian were operating on a shoestring, so they readied the space pretty much themselves: They steam-cleaned the kitchen appliances out on Main Street, painted the walls and installed new carpet. “It took us five weeks to get ready,” Steve says. “We opened on June 5, 1998."

Steve is stepping down from his numerous roles in the community in order to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren and his wife, Dorinda.

Steve Sears will be honored at the Bank of Marin’s 24th annual Spirit of Marin luncheon on October 6 along with honorees from each Chamber of Commerce in Marin. A local luncheon, sponsored by the Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Tiburon Belvedere Rotary Club, will be held in November.
