Joan Palmero Named Volunteer Citizen of the Year 2015

The Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is pleased to name Joan Palmero as its 2015 Volunteer Citizen of the Year.

Joan, who retired in March after 25 years as the receptionist at Tiburon Town Hall, is being recognized for her outstanding achievements while working for the Town of Tiburon and for her leadership and, above all, deep commitment to preserving the Tiburon’s unique historic and cultural character.

As staff liaison to Tiburon’s Heritage and Arts Commission, Palmero has been instrumental in preserving Tiburon’s heritage and in promoting the arts in the community. For years, she coordinated exhibitions by local artists, the Heritage Preservation Award, Tiburon’s Artist Laureate program and many cultural educational programs designed to promote the arts in Tiburon.

As a volunteer, the Belvedere native serves on the Belvedere Tiburon Library’s Program Committee and works as a docent at Tiburon’s Railroad & Ferry Depot Museum. She also translates historic documents from Spanish into English for the Belvedere Tiburon Landmarks Society. An expert in Latin American art, Palmero served as a docent at  The Mexican Museum in San Francisco and now gives talks throughout the area on Latin American art and artists.

In addition to these achievements, Palmero is known for her generosity of spirit and willingness to help.  One small example of how Joan went beyond the call of duty in her job at the front desk at Tiburon Town Hall:  One dayJoan received a call from a distraught widow that there was a dead rabbit in her yard. Knowing that that the town would not remove the rabbit, Joan drove to the widow’s house on her lunch hour and disposed of the rabbit for her.  This was not an isolated incident of Joan doing a kindness for a stranger.

Joan says the greatest thing anyone could ever say about her is that she made a difference. Today, we are able to assure Joan that she has indeed made a difference.
